Canberra Monaro N Scale Group (CMNSG), has operated in the Canberra / Southern NSW Region for over 20 years. The Group was incorporated in the ACT in 2017 and has been a member of the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) since 2018. As a registered Men’s Shed, we strive to advance the mental health and wellbeing of our members and to relieve social isolation by bringing our members together around a shared interest in model railways. We provide activities that support our members in undertaking projects and activities across the range of technical, artistic, historical and social aspects of the model railway hobby.
Initially, the Club delivered these activities at members’ homes, and more recently at premises provided by the Mulga Scout group at Richardson. We are now transitioning to our own leased premises at Henderson Road adjacent to Queanbeyan Railway station. We celebrated the first gathering of members at our new site in mid-October 2021, following the cessation of COVID lockdown orders. Future plans for the site include the construction of a new purpose-built shed.
Club activities include modelling workshops where members can develop and utilise their organisational, planning, woodworking, electrical, metalworking and artistic skills in undertaking work on their own models. We also run group projects where members jointly develop models for club use. Our most popular activity is the running sessions where our members come together to operate trains on the club layout. We also conduct information sessions and social activities.
The Club currently utilises a series of modular units built to the Austrak standard. A new T-Trak modular layout is in development using both club owned and members’ own modules. The Club owns more than 40 Austrak modules, and exhibits model railway layouts up to 12m x 10m in size at local Model Railway Exhibitions, including the Canberra Model Rail Expo at Kaleen, Malkara Scale Model Exhibition, and the Wagga Wagga Model Railway Show.
The benefits to individual mental health and wellbeing of the Model Railway hobby and the Men’s Shed movement are widely recognised. We are proud to be a part of this movement, and invite interested parties who share our aims to join us. Club membership is open to all.
